Everybody likes the idea of giving and generosity. But when it comes down to putting it in the plate or writing the check, there always seem to be so many excuses: We do not agree with the church`s spending priorities; My giving is a private matter; It`s my money, I earned it. The list goes on and on. Hopefully what I`m about to say will encourage you to think differently about your giving. I would like to address a few of these one by one.

The first one is "It`s my money, I earned it." It is a common idea (especially in America) that a person has absolute authority over his own stuff. But the reality is very different. The earth is the Lord`s, and everything in it (Psalm 24:1). Everything we have has come from the LORD, and only indirectly by our earning (1 Chronicles 29:14). Our wealth belongs to us in the same way that a child`s room belongs to a child. The room actually belongs to the parent, but the child is given temporary, accountable charge over it. This is even more so for Christians, who have been bought with the price of Jesus`s blood (1 Corinthians 5:20). Our lives and all of our stuff are ultimately at the disposal of the God who bought us. Remember, you can never out-give God.

How about this one, "I don`t agree with how the church might spend the money"?
That is an understandable objection. But God teaches us to submit to those he has placed in authority over us, and not to be a burden to them (Hebrews 13:17). As Christians, we may have many good disagreements over how money is used in the church, but only if a church is using money immorally or illegally should we consider a confrontational approach, and even then only in a biblical manner (Matthew 18:15-20). The best way to influence the church is to pray and trust that our elders are handling the money appropriately. If this is your excuse, I would encourage you to talk to the elders and gain some understanding rather than not give at all
(1 Corinthians 16:1-2).

Last but not least, "My giving is a private matter between God and me, no one else."
In our culture, a man`s money is no one`s business but his own. Many Christians say that their giving is a private matter. They point to Jesus`s teaching in Matthew 6: “When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing.” But Jesus`s words here have to do with our inner motives for giving (to please God rather than men), not a privilege of privacy. Any time you find yourself insisting that some part of your spiritual life is nobody else`s business, it may be a warning sign that you are trying to hide something. We should keep in mind that the church shares a mutual responsibility for the spiritual growth of its members (Galatians 6:1-5), including our use of money. This means that Christians should be honest and accountable with each other about how we handle God`s money. So my giving is actually between God, me, and my Christian brothers and sisters.

May we be the kind of disciples that are so giving that we are known for our generosity. Giving sets us free, while hoarding entraps us (James 5:2). Giving brings blessing back to us (Luke 6:38). Giving allows us to store up treasures in Heaven rather than here on the earth (Matthew 19:21).
